Caramelotes blankets

The caramelotes blankets are traditional loom weavings, known for their durability and vivid colours. Their name is probably derived from a corruption of the word «camel», indicating the quality or type of wool.
The construction process included the following stages:
  • Thread Preparation: They were mainly used woolen warp. The wool was braided, combed and spun into thread.
  • Paint: The yarn was dyed in large cauldrons in bright colours (red, yellow, green) using in the past vegetable and later synthetic dyes.
  • Weaving in Argalion: The weaver was passing the splinter to the loom and created geometric designs, stripes or «caramels» (square patterns), hence their popular name.
  • Finish (Drystella): Many of these blankets were taken to the dribble (water-grinding), where the force of the water «inflated» the wool, making the weaving denser and warmer.

It can be used as a blanket on the bed, or as a decorative wall or throw on a sofa or even as a rug. It was part of the girls' trousseau and its lovely star-shaped patterns take us back to other times.
